Hi there!

I’m a scientist who loves to bake, and here is where I document my adventures. Maybe you’ll learn a thing a two. Thanks for being here!

So the Super Bowl is in less than 2 weeks.  Are you ready?  It's the Broncos and the Seahawks this year...right? Haha.  I can't pretend I watch any football, who am I kidding?  The only football I watch is the Super Bowl, and that's for the party!  The great food, desserts, friends, family, AND the commercials!

I love any excuse to make desserts, and I love themed ones even better!  These football themed cupcakes are super easy to make.  These can be used for any football game, no matter who your team is.  I used my chocolate cupcake recipe for these.

Chocolate Cupcakes:

Makes 12-15 cupcakes

1 cup flour

1 cup sugar

1/4 cup plus 2 T. cocoa powder

1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup butter (1 stick)

3/4 cup buttermilk

Preheat the oven to 350.  Line a muffin tin with cupcake papers.

Start by creaming together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking sugar, and salt.

After the butter and sugar mixture is light and fluffy, add in the egg and vanilla.  Beat well.

Add in the flour mixture to the butter alternately with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the flour mixture.

Beat for another 30 seconds after all ingredients have been added in.

Spoon batter into cupcake papers, filling 3/4 full.

Bake at 350 for 18-20 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

You will need:

12 Cupcakes

1/2 cup white frosting

1/2 cup green frosting

1/4 cup rainbow nonpareils

1 piping bag, or small ziplock bag

Start by frosting two opposite edges of the cupcakes, leaving a rectangle in the middle un-frosted.  To make the "football fans" dip the cupcake in the sprinkles, coating all of the frosting with nonpareils.

Let the frosting dry, about 30 minutes.  Then take a small amount of green frosting and spread it in the middle, making sure not to get the sprinkles in the frosting.  Smooth it out the best you can.  Then, using a piping bag with a small tip (2 or 3) OR a ziplock bag with the corner cut off, pipe the lines down the field (the green strip).  If you're feeling adventurous, try piping the numbers at the yard lines. Viola!

You will need:

12 cupcakes

2-3 cups chocolate frosting

1/2 cup white frosting

1 piping bag with a 1M tip

1 piping bag with a 2 tip, or a ziplock bag with the corner cut off

In the piping bag with the 1M tip, fill with chocolate frosting.  Pipe across the cupcake in an up-and-down motion moving across left-to-right at the same time.  Hope that makes sense.. Start with small vertical lines, getting bigger until you reach the middle, at the longest point, and get smaller as you move to the other end of the cupcake.  This should make an oval/football shape.  Then, fill he piping bag with the 2 tip, or a ziplock bag with white frosting.  Pipe a horizontal line across the football to make the large seam.  Then pipe vertical lines across it, to make the seams look like a football.  I did 5, but a real football has 8.  Yes of course I Googled that!  It doesn't have to be perfectly realistic for people to get what it is!  Still looks cute with 5, but go for 8 if you think you can fit them in!
